Compensation payment to unauthorised parties

If the person liable to pay damages for the deprivation of a movable thing or for damage to a movable thing provides compensation to that person in whose possession the thing was at the time when the deprivation or damage occurred, then by so providing compensation they are released, even if a third party was the owner of the thing or had another right in the thing, unless they are aware of the right of the third party or their lack of knowledge is due to gross negligence.
